Data generation, data usage, reference managers and data maintenance

6. Introduction

Already during the first preparations of a scientific work the search for and the argument with existing literature is pending.

In this chapter we will work out the different ways to collect source references and output them according to official citation styles in the study.



6.1 Data generation

Literature management in the computer works similar to the good old card index - only much more comfortable.

You have to fill out index cards manually - in Word it works the same way. In the toolbox with "Quotes", the software offers the possibility of recording and managing sources and using them for the source directory.



6.2 Common data

Bibsonomy offers data collections of printed and electronic publications as well as the corresponding data formats, which enable a fast exchange and a fast transfer of all necessary information to our sources.



6.3 University data

University collections are always worth thinning.

They often have important works in their data collections or can link to associated libraries whose holdings cannot be found at BibSonomy and elsewhere.



6.4 Worldwide data

OCLC WorldCat is presented here as the third way to access data from used or usable literature.

It presents itself as the world's largest library catalogue, with online access to all holdings of the associated libraries.



6.5 Reference manager

The easiest way to use the metadata of the used literature for your own scientific work is to use a literature management program, also called reference manager.

The software helps to generate error-free and consistent source references and directories.



6.6 Data maintenance

The metadata of sources can be entered manually in the Zotero sources management program.

It is easier with direct import from the browser - for example when visiting an online shop for books or an online catalogue of publications.



Work questions / task sheet

  1. Try out whether you can collect the metadata of your sources validly and completely according to the card index principle in MS Word - and decide whether it would make more sense for you to use a reference manager (literature management program) instead.
  2. Check the presented providers of metadata: BibSonomy.org, the offerings of your university library and WorldCat.org.
  3. Try out the literature management programs presented - your university or your publisher may have specific guidelines for this. If not: Zotero should be the first choice, as it is available for all leading operating systems and is non-commercial.
  4. Perform all necessary steps: manual input of metadata; adoption of metadata from online offers; preparation and correction of metadata; selection and change of output style.
